An appeal was made for fans to stop singing a particular chant that was heard from the Arsenal side as Everton responded perfectly.

During the Premier League game on December 20, some Arsenal fans sang the controversial chant “Feed the Scousers” in the away game, mocking the poverty on Merseyside.

Everton responded by immediately displaying the “Fans Supporting Foodbanks” logo on the big screen, highlighting their charity initiative with Liverpool food banks.

The chant also sparked widespread criticism at the stadium, on social media, from journalists and from a section of the food bank community.

Stan Collymore called for an end to the “poverty chants”, journalist Caoimhe O’Neill praised Everton’s response and Henry Winter expressed his disappointment.

Stan Collymore tweeted: “Can we please stop singing about poverty?” Every bloody year it happens around Christmas, a time when supporters of EVERY club fight against the tide, relying on food banks and family support and many children go without.

“You might think it’s hilarious because it was a shitty thing to say in the ’80s after Thatcher once destroyed the social fabric of society, but 40 years later, anyone reading this will most likely know someone for whom food and economic poverty are real things that cause misery.

“If you hear it, say it out loud, it’s never been funny and even less so today.”

said Caoimhe O’Neill of the Athletic: “Arsenal fans chant “Feed the Scousers” and Everton immediately put the “Fans Supporting Foodbanks” logo on the screen. Quality from Everton. Absolutely embarrassing of the Arsenal fans singing it. Solidarity with @SFoodbanks. Hunger doesn’t wear club colors ”

Henry Winter tweeted: “According to the Trussell Trust, 14.1 million people in the UK are affected by “food insecurity”. Nationwide problem. Football fans are doing much-needed work with food banks.

“Manchester United fans donated 20kg of food and £261 to their food bank on Sir Matt Busby Way ahead of Monday’s game against Bournemouth. Food and funds that will help support the hungry in Manchester.”

“Before every game at the Emirates, Arsenal fans donate money and food, household items and toiletries at their collection point at the Tony Adams statue. A hugely important contribution to the Islington food bank, which helps so many local people.”

“Something for United and Arsenal fans singing “Feed the Scousers” to think about. Hunger doesn’t wear club colors.”

He then said this via talkSPORT: Obviously tuned in to Arsenal Everton and I have to say in all seriousness, I’m disappointed that Arsenal fans should be singing this chant and joining in, you know, it’s not an Arsenal chant, it’s the fact that they should be joining in at Everton, the “Feed the Scousers” chant at this time of year, so at any time of the year, at Christmas, and just on December 12th, Arsenal had some kind of celebration commemorating the fact that 40 years of Arsenal in the community, Arsenal in of the Community and Everton in the Community are two of the earliest and two of the best community operations.

“And Arsenal, if you go to Emirates on a match day, they have a food bank near the Tony Adams statue. It raises important funds and donations for the Islington Food Bank, which is run by the foundation or the trust, and knowing that area, I think people well think that Arsenal is a pretty affluent area, and they think of Barnsbury and Islington and similar areas, but Holloway has some, you know, pretty deprived areas.”

“Seriously, I was really disappointed with the Arsenal fans. They should be higher. Those who sang it, anyone who sang that is just wrong.”

Twitter users expressed their reaction to fans’ requests to stop chanting that was heard from the Arsenal end, while Everton gave the perfect response…

@everton_arent: That “Feed the Scousers” chant has to be at the top of the worst list. I really thought Arsenal fans would know a bit more about them. How wrong I was. Not a single word came from them.

@nufcpb: It’s a disgusting song Mocking poverty will never be funny or acceptable

@taahir98: Going through quotes and comments, all these Londoners and patriots who claim to care about their country are just fucking rats when you see this shit. They defend him because homelessness and poverty are apparently funny.

@JCutts_afc: As someone who didn’t sing it, I’m ashamed to be associated with the fans who did sing it. We are much better than this, but we have let ourselves down massively and deserve all the shit that is/was coming our way

@DanielSharp_: Answers to these are embarrassing. Singing about poverty isn’t a joke, it’s fucked up. United sang it at Aston Villa this evening. Pest behavior at the highest level.

@jackthegooner1: Totally agree. I was ashamed of my fellow fans who sang that last night. We are better than this.

@CallumMcLeod_: Agreed – I love football madness more than any idiot, but that was classless and stinked at Arsenal

@Rosscdj: When a football fan feels comfortable singing this, no matter what stadium, for or against what team. Hang your head in shame

@Ian_efc81: Probably the worst fans too, who sang it not just once, but like 5/6 times

@stekellyefc: The work that @SFoodbanks does in so many communities across the country should be applauded. The hard work only begins when we make small donations. These volunteers are selfless heroes who represent the best of humanity. Poverty scoffers certainly don’t do that.

@jbefc1: Exactly the right thing. Arsenal fans sing this a few times on Saturday. Just very, very stupid, there are food banks all over the country for a reason, including in London

@PaulButlerO8: Arsenal fans chanted it at the Everton game yesterday. As soon as we left the ground, they all walked away and stared cowardly at the ground.

@CFpriv_: Disgusting singing, must stop

@CeaseSayys: Disgusting stuff from parts of the fan community Do better

@1986_legend: The sooner clubs start communicating with their fans about these songs, the sooner their clubs will stop getting bad publicity

@Mattcj__: Honestly, it makes me angry how football fans sing that
