Key insights (AI-powered):
The move signals that satellite-based NB-IoT is evolving from niche applications to carrier-level infrastructure tightly integrated with cellular cores. For IoT buyers, a single SIM and management platform for terrestrial and non-terrestrial domains reduces integration risk and lowers the barrier to truly global deployments. For vendors, 3GPP-compliant NTN NB-IoT strengthens the business case for multimode chipsets and modules and accelerates economies of scale. This partnership demonstrates how hybrid NTN cellular architectures are becoming a practical design assumption for next-generation wide area IoT.

Hybrid cellular-satellite NB-IoT trials aim to extend Vodafone’s IoT coverage to remote and hard-to-reach areas

Vodafone IoT has announced a new partnership with Skylo Technologies, Inc. to attract customers Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) satellite connectivity services. In the initial phase, the two companies will work together to test the technology with a view to offering a full commercial service in the near future. Skylo operates a global non-terrestrial network spanning 36 countries with a coverage of 70 million square kilometers.

Together, the companies will provide even greater coverage to Vodafone IoT customers and unlock new opportunities for businesses by providing an overlay solution over existing cellular connectivity for IoT devices. This collaboration highlights customers’ growing demand for seamless, scalable and secure connectivity.

Skylo and Vodafone IoTVodafone’s network cores will be integrated, allowing customers to seamlessly switch between mobile and NTN connectivity from a single Vodafone SIM card. With industries such as asset tracking and energy services as well as environmental monitoring and fleet management set to benefit, this new hybrid connectivity model will provide industries with seamless multinational connectivity. Additionally, customers can continue to manage their IoT assets with Vodafone IoT’s Managed Connectivity Platform – for both their mobile and NTN connectivity needs.

Skylo’s network orchestrates multiple satellite constellations and integrates directly into existing chipsets, modules and operating systems. Skylo has certified modules from a robust global chipset and module ecosystem that serve as the foundation for a variety of use cases.

Erik Brenneis, CEO of Vodafone IoT, said: “As we continue our mission to provide our customers with truly global IoT connectivity, today marks another significant step forward.”

“Our new partnership with Skylo will help us deliver ubiquitous connectivity to our customers and drive a step-change in network access, reliability and resiliency, which together will enable the next wave of innovative IoT solutions.”

Parthsarathi Trivedi, Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of Skylo, said:
“This trial is a critical step in integrating our 3GPP-compliant satellite connectivity into Vodafone’s IoT ecosystem. We demonstrate how Skylo’s network can seamlessly extend Vodafone IoT’s reach into the most remote areas, adding coverage to millions of square kilometers. It’s about proving that ‘connectivity everywhere’ is no longer a futuristic concept – it’s here, standards-based and ready for global scale.”
