Telematics adoption is accelerating as fleets prioritize efficiency and compliance

According to a new research report from leading IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, the total number is active fleet management systems used in commercial vehicle fleets in North America was around 19.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2024. At a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.6 percent, this number is expected to reach 33.2 million units by 2029.

The North American fleet management market is relatively consolidated. There are 10 players with an estimated installed base of at least half a million units in the region, and the top five players alone account for 50 percent of active units in North America. However, the market is served by numerous companies and continues to attract the attention of telematics providers from all parts of the world looking to expand in the region.

A handful of solution providers have emerged as leaders in the fleet management market in North America, and the top five providers are all estimated to have reached the million mark in terms of installed base.

“Canada-based Geotab is the clear leader, with millions of active fleet management subscribers in North America alone.”said Rickard Andersson, principal analyst at Berg Insight.

He adds that Samsara is the runner-up, ahead of Verizon Connect, CalAmp and Lytx, all of which are based in the US. Other solution providers with an estimated installed base of at least half a million units in North America include Motive, Platform Science and Powerfleet.

“In particular, Platform Science has acquired Trimble’s global transportation telematics businesses, while Powerfleet has significantly expanded its footprint through the acquisition of MiX Telematics and Fleet Complete.”continued Mr. Andersson.

Other major players with decades of experience in the North American fleet management space include Zonar Systems and Solera Fleet Solutions. Zonar Systems was acquired by GPS Trackit, which is now transitioning to the Zonar brand.

“The remaining top 15 players with an estimated installed base of at least a few hundred thousand units include Bridgestone Mobility Solutions, GPS Insight, One Step GPS, Gurtam and Teletrac Navman.”said Mr. Andersson.

Bridgestone is represented in the North American fleet telematics market primarily through Azuga and partly through Webfleet. Solution providers just outside the top list also include Linxup, IntelliShift, Forward Thinking Systems, Rastrac, MICHELIN Connected Fleet, FleetMovil (Guidepoint Systems), Rand McNally, JJ Keller and Raven Connected. Forward Thinking Systems recently took over the Logic Platform position from KORE.

“Other notable fleet management players active in North America include Positioning Universal, Radius, EROAD and ISAAC Instruments.”said Mr. Andersson.

Berg Insight assumes a future scenario in which the global fleet management market is dominated by a handful of providers with an installed base in the millions. The milestone of one million subscribers worldwide was surpassed by more than a dozen solution providers, driven by growth strategies based on M&A activity and rapid organic growth. Six of the providers have reached the two million mark and two players have exceeded the four million mark.

Mr. Andersson concluded:

“In fact, Geotab surpassed five million global subscriptions last quarter, prior to the acquisition of Verizon Connect’s international operations last month.”
